The Lecture Series: Need of Environmental Education for Students By Kashish Vasudev (Historian)

A very insightful lecture series on the "Need of Environmental Education for Students” was presented by Mrs. Jyotsana Khatri, a distinguished alumnus of our School of Education. The session was meant to emphasize the significance of environmental education in developing responsible citizens for a sustainable future.

1. Understanding the Environment

Mrs. Khatri opened the session with a description of the term 'environment,' explaining it as a total of all living and non-living entities that act and react upon each other. She also discussed how the term comes from the French term 'environner,' translating to 'surround.'

2. Environmental Education Meaning

She quoted the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) definition of 1970 that defines environmental education as the process of realizing values and rationalizing concepts so as to encourage the development of skills and attitudes needed for personal, community, national, and international living.

3. Importance of Environmental Education

The presenter stressed that environmental education is important for generating awareness regarding environmental issues and inculcating responsibility among students. It makes them aware of the implications of their actions and induces them to use sustainable means.

4. Advantages of Environmental Education

Mrs. Khatri underscored a number of advantages of environmental education, such as:

  • Stimulating environmentally conscious behavior
  • Fostering social responsibility
  • Increasing students' awareness of world environmental issues

Of primary focus was the aspect of sustainable development, where all concerns were towards the satisfaction of needs in the present without detracting from future generations' potential for satisfying their own. Stressful to bring into awareness students regarding sustainable use would guarantee sustained safety of the environment.

Interactive Quiz and Conclusion

At the closing of the session, an interactive quiz was held to involve students and to consolidate their knowledge on the topics covered. The session was closed with a letter of appreciation and token of gift given to Mrs. Jyotsana Khatri by the Dean and other faculty members for her invaluable contribution.

The presentation was very informative and inspiring, and the audience was left with a clearer perspective on why environmental education was important.
