Clinical pharmacy services have proved and are proving their importance in healthcare systems of the world towards better healthcare, especially in western countries. Very few professional clinical pharmacy services are being provided in India. Hence, the need for a patient-oriented approach in Pharmacy curriculum was felt by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) and in view of that, the Union Ministry of Health and Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) introduced a six-year Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) course. It provides intensive training in pharmacy practice and clinical pharmacy services. The Pharm.D program gives a global edge to the students and enables the pharmacist to advise, consult, and help Doctors in dispensing medicines to patients. It is a six-year training based course wherein a student is exposed to actual pharmacy practice or clinical pharmacy services in hospital settings. Practical training is conducted at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, 1000 bedded super specialty tertiary care Hospital funded by the parent body of the Institute.

  • 2nd and 4th Installment (as applicable) - Last Date Payment: 15th January each academic year.

Q1. What is Pharm.D course?

Ans. Pharm.D course is aProfessional Pharmacy doctoral programme of 6 yrs duration after 10+2 (science academic stream) which includes 5yrs of academic study + 1 year of internship or residency.

Q2. What is Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate)?

Ans. Pharm. D (PB) course is a Professional Pharmacy doctoral Programme. B.Pharm graduates shall be admitted as lateral entry candidate to the 4th year of Pharm. D programme & the duration of course is 3 academic years ( 2yrs of study and 1 year of internship or residency).

Q3. What are the eligibility criteria to join Pharm. D courses?

Ans. For Pharm.D

i) A pass in 10+2 examination with Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects along with one of the following subjects:

Mathematics or Biology

A pass in D.Pharm course from an institution approved by the Pharmacy council of India under section 12 of The Pharmacy Act.

For Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate)

i) A pass in B.Pharm from an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act.

Q4. How many numbers of admissions will be made by the institution for the Pharm. D and Pharm.D (Post Baccalaureate)?

Ans. Number of admissions for the Pharm. D program shall be as prescribed by the pharmacy Council of India from time to time and presently it is restricted to 30 students intake for Pharm.D & 10 students for Pharm. D (PB) per academic year.

Q5. What is the scope of Pharm.D Programme?

Ans. Pharm.D programme was introduced to create next generation Pharmacist who will have competencies to work in Hospital and clinical settings to be able to provide pharmaceutical care to the patients and support the physician and other health professionals on the safe and effective use of medicines. The said programme and the role of pharmacist in practice is settings is globally accepted and in India this has been introduced with the starting of M.Pharm Pharmacy practice programme in 1995 and the starting of Pharm.D programme in 2008 is one more step in the same direction!

Q6. A brief note about the subjects in Pharm.D Programme?

Ans. The subjects pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical jurisprudence, pharmaceutical chemistry etc are known as the pharmaceutical sciences subjects and serve as the foundation for understanding the physical and Chemical nature of drugs and their effect on humans! The Practice and clinical subjects are taught from the fourth year which will make you feel excited with the role you can play in understanding the disease and also the efficacy of such medications!

Q7. Could Pharm.D Internship be done outside India?

Ans. As of now the students are expected to do their internship only in approved hospital of the Pharmacy Council of India. The PCI is presently examining that whether a minimum period of two or three months be permitted in a hospital other than the one approved either in India or abroad for speciality training at the discretion of the student. However the policy is yet to be evolved for the same and as soon as the same is approved, the same will be notified on the PCI website www.pic.nic.in
