
After the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand, the state has undergone significant changes in the laws related to marriage, divorce, succession, inheritance and live-in relations. A special seminar on the subject was organized by the Department of Political Science and Psychology, Faculty of Social and Humanities Sciences, SGRR University. Dr. Rakhi Panchola, Head of Department, Department of Political Science, SDM Government PG College, Doiwala, who was present as the keynote speaker in the seminar, shared her views. The seminar was inaugurated by the keynote speaker of the seminar and Dean of the Faculty of Social and Humanities Sciences, Prof. Preeti Tiwari by lighting the lamp. Addressing the students on the occasion, Dr. Rakhi Panchola said that the Uttarakhand government has officially implemented UCC from 27th January 2025, making it the first state in independent India to implement UCC. The purpose of this code is to establish a uniform law for all citizens irrespective of religion, caste and gender.
During her address at the seminar, Dr. Rakhi highlighted various aspects of UCC. "The enactment of the Uniform Civil Code is an important step towards gender equality and social justice in the state. It will safeguard the rights of women and end the evil practices in the society. They discussed in detail key provisions such as marriage and divorce, live-in relationship and rights in property. He said that registration of live-in relationships has been made compulsory, and both sons and daughters have been given equal rights in property, which will end gender discrimination.
Addressing the students on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Preeti Tiwari, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, said that the Uniform Civil Code in India advocates the application of rules related to equal marriage, divorce, property succession, inheritance and other civil matters to all citizens. Currently, different personal laws apply to different religions in India. He said that UCC has been implemented in Uttarakhand on January 27. He said that this will give students an opportunity to understand the Indian Constitution, legal system and social harmony better.
Dr. Garima Singh, coordinator of the program, gave vote of thanks at the end of the program. On this occasion, along with Professor Dr. Geet Rawat from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, all the teachers and hundreds of students were present.
